Project description

The goal of this project is to safely and anatomically label skin markers in early detection studies for skin cancer.

Anatomy Mapper™ (see link 1 below), is an interactive web-based map, which maps a precise anatomical term by hovering over a specific location on the body. Anatomy Mapper provides a terminology to define an anatomical location on the human surface, which helps to resolve the lack of precision, accuracy and reliability of the terms used by health care providers, this is important in specialties such as dermatology, for safer patient care (link 2 below).

Anatomy Mapper™ provides human surface anatomy terminology based on 625 labels to unambiguously determine all regions of the human body surface.

The figure above shows on the left the anatomical labels assigned for 10 skin markers, using Anatomy Mapper™. The developed product uses the SMPL-X model (link 3 below) to partition the human body into 20908 very small cells that can be located with a single cell identifier (1 to 20908). SMPLify-X (link 3 below) has been used to model the 3D patient from a single frontal image. Algorithms were developed to map the 20,908 cells of the SMPLX model to the 625 Anatomy Mapper labels. The figure on the top right shows a close-up of 5 patient skin markers and their associated labels. A collateral use of this project has been anonymization, since images like the ones shown above correspond to a real patient, with real marks, but the privacy of the patient has been preserved when communicating these findings. This project has been developed for a major medical company in the USA.
